an attempt to use it fails - it doesn't catch the settings from settings.py.

According to Django's roadmap 1.8 is no longer supported, so I'm not inclined to support it myself.
If there is a straight forward change that doesn't impact newer versions, then I'd be willing to merge a PR to improve compatibility,

I find the same issue is present when attempting to use redbeat 0.10 with Django 1.9.7
