Bug description

  1. upgraded today (11/28)
  2. linked to Android
  3. no messages migrated to desktop

** Solution attempted, no success, found here: https://support.signal.org/hc/en-us/articles/360007320431-Troubleshooting-Desktop-migration-to-the-new-Signal-Desktop

My desktop doesn't have "Set up with import" option under "File"
Under my desktop "File" lives "preferences" and "quite Signal" ONLY

Steps to reproduce

  1. select "file"

Actual result:

  1. select "File"
  2. No "Set up with import" option

Expected result:

"Set up with import" should be under "File" and messages sync

Please follow the bug template. We need a debug log from your desktop device, and ideally your mobile device as well.

First, messages are never migrated from your mobile device. However, they can be migrated from your previous Chrome App desktop instance, if you choose 'Import...' from the File menu on the very first screen.

Hi there, I'm trying to figure this out as well. But I can't find "Import" anywhere.

I had to reinstall W7. My old drive has a folder C:\Users\xxx\AppData\Roaming\Signal but copying those files into the new install directory caused issues. While it did import old messages, it was not possible to receive new messages.

What is the proper way to manually copy/migrate the old files to a new desktop system?

As for creating a backup (see link in OP): "Export message history from the "old" Signal Desktop"

  1. Go to chrome://extensions/
  2. Find Signal Private Messenger.
  3. Select Details.
  4. Choose the Developer Mode option in the top right.
  5. Select the Update tab.

I already fail at the first step. How? Where? This might make sense to people with more knowledge, but I can't figure this out.

@silent5am The instructions you've copied into your post are specific to the Chrome App version of Signal Desktop, which has been discontinued. But you're using the current Standalone Signal Desktop, and the steps you previously attempted are the proper way to migrate.

Please enter a new bug with the specific errors you were seeing when you tried to copy your Signal directory to a new machine.

Oh ok, thanks for the clarification. Will do!
