A lot of games are actually a work of art. Art in its true meaning! Some piece of human-made work, that provide a great aesthetic joy. (Sure, a bunch of pixelized blood and gory might not be found attractive by anyone, but blood and gory is not a complete contents of a lot of games).
By having access to the game resources it makes possible for the community for create fan art, spin-offs and mods of their favorite games.
There's no intention to pirate those resources. Neither any honest game developer would do that. (were there any examples?.. todo: fill out history section)
