Conditionally registering Conversions or Error Handling

Im trying to generate thumbnails of PDFs. For some reason imatgick cant handle all pdfs i throw at it. So i need either a way to register conversions conditionally, or to wrap the conversion in a try catch block.

Is there a way to do this?
