I don't think this will work. The step context could be modified within the execution of the step so doing the copy this late won't guarantee a reset to the previous state. There are test failing with this update that illustrate this point (TaskletStepExceptionTests#testCommitError and TaskletStepExceptionTests#testUnexpectedRollback) |

Here is a fix for BATCH-1767, this is a blocker one for a project, I hope you can take it into account soon.
