GHA failure of new standalone functions checks #102

@andrjohns I'm starting too prepare the CRAN submission and I just noticed the GHA workflows for testing the standalone functions compatibility are now failing after @bgoodri merged the PR (they were passing before merging):

Any idea why compilation is failing?
