Partly solved through #4 by @callumlocke which excludes the pinned tabs from the count and never discards them.

Would it be interesting to have the pinned tabs included in the count? This could be done by splitting the option from #4 into two options:

never auto-close pinned tabs
ignore pinned tabs in count
