Use git shortlog to expose the contributors list both at a repo level and/or an individual file level. This is useful for sites that may want to highlight the maintainers and/or authors on a per-page basis.

It also allows the fetch depth to be overridden so that contributions older than the most recent one can be obtained.

Sorry @chkohner, I've still not gotten around to looking into this properly! Without properly reviewing, my only reservation is that I'm mildly concerned about increasing footprint/maintenance burden by exposing additional specific bits of git data. But at the same time, I can see there's deffo a use-case for this. Just thought I'd let you know my thoughts! I'll try and properly review soon.
