Local only notes disappearing #2502
Comments
Hey, can you explain what you mean by "I changed my notes to be saved locally"? Did you enable Local only mode for all these notes? Or did you disable syncing as a whole from settings? |
Hey, thanks for the reply. I right clicked on them individually and chose "local only" |
Do you have local backups turned on? |
Can you also explain when you noticed the notes gone and if you took any specific action before that (from this device or another)? |
Hi, local backups are not on |
I still have "enable sync", "enable auto sync", and "enable real time sync in editor" enabled. Could it be that they are still synced somehow somewhere? |
I just checked and I have a back up from April 26, but that's pretty old. |
Hi, is someone working on this case? thanks |
Hi, checking in again about this. Is someone working on this case? |
@thecodrr Perhaps you could tell me where on my computer the notes are stored so I can recover them? What I mean is, when I enable "local only" on the note, where does the note get stored? |
Hi just wondering if anyone was working on this case? |
@Lorenzo795 hey, sorry for the delay in responding.
Local only notes are stored in the database just like other notes. This database is the one that comes built-in with Chrome and is stored in different locations depending on the OS. To be clear, these notes are not "files" but stored inside a single database. It is very weird that these notes got deleted even though they are local only. I will test this further and see what could be the issue. As for recovering these notes, the only option is to use a recent backup. If you don't have a very recent backup, there's no other way unfortunately. |
I also thought it was weird. I mean I lost weeks of work. It's very sad. |

Would you have any suggestions for me for I give up? Should I try uninstalling and reinstalling the app? |
Also, there aren't any automatic back ups? I just can't believe that all the weeks of work are just lost. Is there any way to access the database? It's impossible that all the notes just "disappeared". Example, when I click "local only", what does that mean? Where are the notes been placed? Are they stored on my computer somewhere?? Thank you |
I have only 2 notes out of about 50 that are still there. These 2 notes are the only ones I didn't make "local only" |
There are automatic backups but user has to turn them on. This is because each platform has different requirements for permissions so we can't enable them by default everywhere.
The database is part of the browser and managed by the browser. There's not much you can do even if you did locate the database (which is hard because of how Chrome manages everything).
Local only means that your note won't get synced. Other than that there's no difference between a local only note and a non local only note. They are stored in the same place and work the same way.
Unfortunately, the only real way of recovering these notes is via a backup. Since the backup you have is really old, that's not an option. I do want to highlight that we are working on fixing this. The reason I said "weird" above is because I am not 100% sure why it happened. |
Hi, thanks for the reply. I just wanted to check one more time before I restore my backup from April. Are you 100% sure there's no way for me to recover all the notes that disappeared? |
This has been fixed in the recent version. |
Hi, I changed my notes to be saved locally. I restarted my computer today, fired up notenook, and everything is gone, only the notebooks remain but there aren't any notes in them. The only ones that are still viewable are the ones that are synced online. Can you let me know where the notes are?
