Here's an email I got from a peoplesopen user - I asked for specific description on . . . and got it! The browser used was safari v10.1.1 on mac os Sierra v10.12.5

Here’s the error message I get from Netflix when I try to watch a movie with PeoplesOpen:

Whoops, something went wrong...

Streaming Error

You seem to be using an unblocker or proxy. Please turn off any of these services and try again. For more help, visit netflix.com/proxy.
Error Code: S7111-1331-5059

The movie then plays when I switch to [name of private network]

Sounds like a feature to me :p

Seriously though, if services block VPNs then it is the services that are breaking the internet, not us. Netflix is attempting to prevent people from accessing their U.S. service from other countries. Geo-based blocking and VPN-blocking goes against the spirit of the internet but unfortunately the only thing we can do is switch our exit node IP or ask Netflix to stop blocking us. If someone thought this was worthwhile then I would advise them to tell Netflix that we are a small local wireless ISP.

During yesterdays meeting, someone suggested to contact netflix to advocate for removing the exit node ip from the netflix black list.

I use Nord VPN in my day-to-day, and I always have to turn if off when I use NF. IDK if NF makes case by case exceptions in these matters. I suppose it's worth a shot.

@aetilley do you mind reaching out to nf? You can find the exit node ip by connecting the peoplesopen and using something like whatsmyip . Alternatively, you can look in your home node config.

This will likely stop being a problem when we switch to hurricane electric. If someone has a computer with netflix capability we can try to tunnel through the new exit node IP at the next meeting.

@Juul cool - this should be tested by swapping out the old exit node url with the new one in /etc/config/tunneldigger on a home node right? What is the ip of the new exit node?

I haven't finished configuring the new exit node, but if you tell me which ssh public key to use I can grant you access. Then you can do:

ssh -T -D 223344 <ip of exit node>

and then set your web browser to use localhost port 223344 as a SOCKS v5 proxy. Make sure you check the box telling it to use the proxy for DNS lookups. This is a general way of turning an ssh connection into a quick and dirty "almost vpn" for the browser.

Just tested watching netflix through the new exit node (via a node flashed with 0.2.3 and makenode commit 686499d85b702501ce31be17385f6d15c1f792ef)
It appears to be working. For those interested, HBO Now also appears to work. People with TOmesh had this idea of creating a test bed for everything "average" people do on the internet, this could be a cool feature to role into https://peoplesopen.net/monitor eventually.
