How to modify the modeline?

I know that you can set a completely new modeline. But how do I make a slight modification to the modeline that's coming with spacemacs (without starting from scratch)?

I want the filesize display on the left to either go completely away or to be integrated with the display of the file enconding and the line/column numbers.

An example of how to do this would help a lot.

You can't. Make a new one based on the Spacemacs one that looks like what you want.
