Technically speaking, you need approval of all https://github.com/syncthing/syncthing/blob/master/CONTRIBUTORS to relicense their contributions as GPL. If you were transferring copyright, that wouldn't be necessary,

Cool. Now the link is restored. =) Still wonder what caused the rename? I came here from Wikipedia only because it was the only project with MIT license - as you may see there is a ton of GPLed sync stuff there.

@techtonik Seeing as every file has a 20 line copyright notice plastered on it, I am guessing he is afraid that someone might not give if him full credit ;)

Every company I've ever worked for had copyright notices in every file.
I think you have to do that for legal reasons.

As far as I know it is not needed for legal reasons, although you are indeed not the only ones to do it. I just personally dislike it, as a single line pointing to the license/copyright would suffice as well.

I personally don't really care either way. The current approach was recommended by some FSF dude a while back, and, yeah, whatever. :)

Google requires license reference to be present at the very top. I guess that's because many open source projects don't care about origin of the files and it is hard to detect files with other licenses sneaked in. It is then pain to remove the code that was GPLed in the first place, especially when you patched it a lot.
However, the question is not about license placement. The question is why transition from MIT to GPL?
