vconsole-setup: updates & fixes #3651
Conversation
This patch updates vconsole helper to: - correctly handle fonts of heights different than 16 - avoid issues with setfont's -m option And adds: - new vc_max tunable, so user can set how many consoles should be adjusted - iutf8 flag is now set/reset as necessary Short revised code flow overview: - determine whether we're setting one console or range - open tty0 or supplied device, do sanity checks - parse config and command line (if applicable) - sanitize vc_max - do per-console tests (allocated, openable, kbd mode) and if they all pass - per-console changes (font, utf8, iutf8, kbd mode) - if at least one console was modified, do global changes: sysfs utf8 flag, loadkeys

any chance you can split this out in multiple individual patches? this is really hard to review otherwise. We generally follow the rule that we return negative errno-style errors in our functions (see CODING_STYLE). Your code appears to change that for most functions, and I can't say I really like that... |
|
your code removes the logic for KD_FONT_OP_COPY and replaces it with much slower invocations of setfont for each VC, if I got this right. What's the rationale for that? setfont is excessively slow, and we really shouldn't invoke it 64 times... if KD_FONT_OP_COPY is broken in the kernel, why not fix that instead? |
Yes, can do that. The single patch was effect that the whole thing was basically one logical change, but yea I can do that.
I only followed what vconsole did in functions (before my patch) such as keyboard_load_and_wait(), font_load_and_wait() and how it decided between success/failure - including the functions I added (that needed to return something). I can change that to -errno (I prefer that myself, I don't like concept of 'bool' in C much either ...)
By default 12 times, with tunable added in vconsole.conf to set it explicitly by the user (expecting one would lower it depending on needs, not go beyond 12 which can't even be used conveniently. The vconsole originally used hardcoded 15 value). setfonts are of course called in parallel, and then we call in loop wait_for_terminate_and_warn() to wait for all of them. So the timewise cost is not much different from calling it once. Now why I decided for it.
(it seems this ioctl simply breaks or I'm misusing it somehow), anyway: So instead of following this route - considering vconsole's work is a one-shot tiny fraction of the rest of the boot process either way - what if we spawned setfonts per console (avoiding ioctl() games), in parallel, with user knob available to set the amount of terminals to change (defaulting to 12 as opposed pre-patch 15). That was my final reasoning/approach. |
|
For the record, I did some tests and while: KD_FONT_OP_COPY seems hopeless. KD_FONT_OP_GET and KD_FONT_OP_SET work fine - so we can copy and set the font per console w/o calling extra setfonts. Would that approach be ok ? |

You can just do
return log_warning_errno(errno, "Failed"...);

Just return int that is negative on error, and the non-negative fd otherwise.

We prefer to an explicit comparison to zero for ints, so please use something like this instead:
if (r != 0 || !IN_SET(curr_mode, K_XLATE, K_UNICODE)) {

It's better to warn and continue here using the default... Setting too many / too few consoles is not a big issue.

Yes. Can you update the patch? I think that your changes look nice in general. I made some more comments on the style. It's fine to do this in one patch, you are changing a lot of the code so I don't think it's worth the trouble to split it into multiple patches, it won't be much clearer anyway. |

Allright, I'll update the patch following your remarks. I'll also split it into separate pieces, so diffs are easy (and logical) on eyes. |

Further there was only one user ever. - Android's loadfont, busybox and console-tools only ever use OP_GET and OP_SET - fbset documentation only mentions the kernel cmdline font: option, not anything else. - systemd used OP_COPY before release 232 published in Nov 2016 Now unfortunately the crucial report seems to have gone down with gmane, and the commit message doesn't say much. But the pull request hints at OP_COPY being broken systemd/systemd#3651 So in other words, this never worked, and the only project which foolishly every tried to use it, realized that rather quickly too. Instead of trying to fix security issues here on dead code by adding missing checks, fix the entire thing by removing the functionality. Note that systemd code using the OP_COPY function ignored the return value, so it doesn't matter what we're doing here really - just in case a lone server somewhere happens to be extremely unlucky and running an affected old version of systemd. The relevant code from font_copy_to_all_vcs() in systemd was: /* copy font from active VT, where the font was uploaded to */ cfo.op = KD_FONT_OP_COPY; cfo.height = vcs.v_active-1; /* tty1 == index 0 */ (void) ioctl(vcfd, KDFONTOP, &cfo); Note this just disables the ioctl, garbage collecting the now unused callbacks is left for -next. v2: Tetsuo found the old mail, which allowed me to find it on another archive. Add the link too. This patch updates vconsole helper to:
See http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.comp.sysutils.systemd.devel/36874 for more details about both of those. Example of config where vconsole will cause issues:
KEYMAP=pl
FONT=latarcyrheb-sun32
FONT_MAP=8859-2
It also adds:
The code changed a bit, the revised basic code flow is now:
per-console changes (font, utf8, iutf8, kbd mode)
