Handles on ways are very tricky to tap.

I expected, the tool (d3), not the App (iD) to solve such problems.
This way:
A touching finger is bigger as a cursor spot. So its "easy" to select a small object.
If there are multible objects in the "touch range" the nearest to the center is selected.
(Try tosme.openstreetmap.de on iPad)

No, that's very much not the responsibility of d3 and should not be, ever.

If you are using a pen, its quite okay.

is it possible to detect the finger size of the user?
