Summary

It would be great to make sure presentations about TTW for other conferences and organizations are accessible (in the disability sense) by providing suggestions to presenters on the Community Handbook section Presenting about the Turing Way.

What needs to be done?

  • Possibly adding a section heading to the [page about presentations](https://the-turing-way.netlify.app/community-handbook/presenting_
  • Making points like
    • One of the reasons organizers ask for slides in advance is for access with assistive technology
    • Make slides available in advance, or a link to slide repository. Repositories allow you to change the slides up to the last minute.
    • Include alt text for graphs, diagrams, maps, and other images
    • Provide instructions on alt text for different formats like Rmarkdown and using Microsoft accessibility checker?
    • Encouragement to describe images or diagrams out loud if no alt text is provided
    • Instructions on presenting slowly, clearly, facing camera, for comprehension of speech
    • point to accessibility policy and details of practice in Accessibility Guide, eventually.

Who can help?

Thank you for flagging this @LizHareDogs! I have used this to prepare for the working group celebrations on Friday, using the HackMD slides format: https://hackmd.io/IrmPPgn3QCaosH_5AAG3Ig

While it's just the beginning, perhaps we can use this to get started on the broader policies?
