NEWS: please help us identify the best name for these Community Calls, vote in the following issue here

Summary

This year, our community calls will serve as a platform for the community to come together, share accomplishments, and discuss governance-related matters.

The Turing Way Community Calls have been scheduled for the following dates, please make sure you add them in your calendars.

What needs to be done?

One month before:

  • Liaise with Working group Chairs and identify which working group will give a 5-min presentation (3 working groups will present each time)
  • Liaise with Delivery team meeting the presentation topics and speakers
  • Make a registration page
  • Promote the event in our newsletter and social media platforms

One week before:

  • Finish the agenda on framapad and share it with working groups and delivery team
  • Send a reminder to the working groups and delivery team to request their slide deck
  • Promote the event in our newsletter and social media platforms

During Community Call:

  • Record the session
  • Share the framapad with the attendees

After the Community Call:

  • Review Community Call pluses and deltas
  • Community Call debrief
  • Upload notes to the governance folder
  • Upload the recording on our YouTube Channel
  • Share the recording in our newsletter and social media plaftforms

At my 1:1 with @malvikasharan - we discussed the possibility of changing this name to: "Governance Fireside Chats" or "Community Fireside Chats" to distinguish the name "Community Call" from the umbrella category of "community calls" that we have in the community more broadly.

The upload is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzzfaSQQL1w

Thanks folks - this is a super helpful discussion.

@aleesteele - I don't think these calls are fireside chats. From https://the-turing-way.netlify.app/community-handbook/fireside-chat.html:

A fireside chat is a personal and interactive discussion involving a moderator and guest, allowing an audience to gain insights into the guest’s personal stories and thoughts on various topics. - Source: Vimeo. (2022)

These community calls should really be more like town hall meetings. From Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Town_hall_meeting.

Town hall meetings, also referred to as town halls or town hall forums, are a way for local and national politicians to meet with their constituents either to hear from them on topics of interest or to discuss specific upcoming legislation or regulation. During periods of active political debate, town halls can be a locus for protest and more active debate.

Here is the issue for the first call: #3510
Notes: https://annuel2.framapad.org/p/TTW-community-call-15Feb

Next call is on 23 April

Notes from the coworking call:

  • What lessons from the last call we can integrate
    • Zoom registration requirement was a barrier, we should use GitHub issue/pad to get people to join directly
    • Do a green room prep before the call to make sure everyone is there and prepared to speak
    • Renaming to iterate open discussion (not passive listening)
  • We keep breakout rooms - that's where we get people to talk about the same thing and understand the full picture
  • We had localisation, accessibility and book dash last time
  • Format - 60 minutes?
    • Welcome: 5 mins
    • Icebreaker Breakout: 5 mins
    • Project updates: Infra and Comms (5 mins each): 10 mins
    • Breakout to discuss the ask -- have speakers leave questions that they need input from the community: 20 mins
    • Report out and open discussion: 20 mins

Passive participation vs listening in:

  • We lose some people if we ask them to actively participate
  • Can we provide other ways to contribute if they don't want to be in breakout rooms - encouraging listening in even when folks don't know much about The Turing Way
