I don't think this should block release, but thoughts on making this the default and offering a way for authors to publicize comments?

The copy text is also geared towards creating a conversation between you and the article's author. It's not intended to create a big, public-facing discussion. I think that product design decision fits well with the constrained "in the margin" space for the comment.

I think this is a per post or blog setting for Medium, I think you can
choose to have everything public.

I agree that we should evaluate whether we'd like to change to this but it
shouldn't necessarily block launch.
