I have already posted a release status issue where you can get the latest beta and status:

For starters testing everything is fair game. I am particularly interested in feedback on the new menu structure. As soon as that settles I will localize and we can refine. Note maildir functions not wired yet. Also note menu differences :

  • Removed file menu - redundant
  • Removed folder/message items from tools menu
  • Added button for tools ops
  • Tools menu on main menu toolbar, should also be on hamburger menu by release

If time allows I will try to add PDF export with index and attachments

Thanks to all in advance.

I have tested everything.
I need to do at least testing on Linux and verify all locales.
I also have to wait for an important mbox patch as any mbox exports are bad.

Yesterday I've installed the fresh Thunderbird 115 under Linux and ImportExportTools NG 14.0.0-b6. I can configure it with the options dialogue and I can see a "Export Messages As..." in the context menu of a mail. Additionally, I can find this as a sub menu under different other sub menus in the mail's context menu.

Problem: whenever I tried to open that "Export Messages As..." sub menu, it disappears. Looks like a "hide" command to the sub menu in its opening-event ;)

But it does not only disappears when trying to open the "Export Messages As...", it also disappears when opening any other sub menu in the mail's context menu.

When right-clicking on a mail:

menu_visible_in_context_menu

After selecting any sub menu, for example the "Tag"-menu, where "Export Messages As..." is also shown:

menu_invisible_in_context_menu

And in some of my IMAP folders the "Export Messages As..." menu is shown three times:
menu_three_times

First, much appreciate the post. I need as much feedback as possible given the magnitude of this release. 👍

So are you a prior IETNG user? If so you will notice the menus have been completely redesigned, but are also part of the new web apis, so we are all working with new stuff.
The b6 beta has been extensively tested on Windows and about 25% on Linux. I use my Mint 23 VM. What Linux do you use?

I have not seen anything like this on Windows and one of the first tests on Linux I have done is the export messages. That all has been good, however, I have to update from the last beta.

Let me do that and see what I get. The menus should be stable and I don't do anything atypical so I am very surprised by things like the tags menu.
Cheers

It's all very strange...

The story in short: yesterday I had that problem (you see it in the screenshots) the hole day on my machine. This morning I tried to reproduce it on all of my private and business machines, but without success, everywhere it works as expected. Then I tried to reproduce it in the exaktly same situation as yesterday, but today it also works correctly so... hmmm.....

I hope I haven't caused too much panic ;)

The long story, to answer the questions: I am using several Desktop-PCs, notebooks and a virtual machine (KVM), all with Debian (Bullseye), Kubuntu 22.04 or Tuxedo OS (which is based on newest KDE neon = Kubuntu). All are using KDE desktop and with almost identical configurations and applications.

ImportExportToolsNG 14b6 is in use here with a completely fresh installation of Thunderbird 115 with a new and empty profile. ImportExportToolsNG is the only add-on installed in Thunderbird.

The behaviour yesterday was very weird. And now it does not longer happen, without any change on that Thunderbird installation or on the machine.... that is completely illogical.

I've been using Thunderbird for what feels like centuries. And because it unfortunately still lacks the essential function of saving mails with meaningful names, ImportExportToolsNG is an absolutely indispensable necessity.

As tested now, ImportExportToolsNG 14b6 works perfectly for me, only I'm not happy with the new Thunderbird. Functionally everything is perfect, it works flawlessly, but visually it is a total loss, because the colours of the system are unfortunately not respected at all and so it just looks horrible... but this is another story for another place.

Greetings and thanks for all your work,
Christian

Just one little detail in the options dialogue. I want to use a custom date format and a custom file naming.

I select "Use Extended Format" and configure my custom file name with "${date_custom}". Ok so far. But then I can't edit the "Custom date" field, it is disabled:

Screenshot_20230714_092905

So I had to activate "Use following format", edit the "Custom date" field and switch back to "Use Extended Format". This is.... funny ;)

Probably just a beta/development restriction, but just in case it's a bug:

Using the release build of Thunderbird 115 and the 14.0.0-b6 beta of the addon I can only export 100 messages at a time, no matter how many are selected in Thunderbird's message pane. That never was a problem before, I used to use the addon to backup several thousands of mails that way on a regular basis.

The issue only occurs when selecting messages in the message pane, exporting entire folders works as expected.

cleidigh commented Jul 15, 2023

@rimisuko
Thank you for reporting! This is definitely some bug, I have been testing with less than 100 messages up to this point, there shouldn't be an issue so I will see what is going on.

Important note:
One important Thunderbird bug is delaying my release. Any mbox exports will result in bad mbox files. Don't do mbox exports!!!
Unfortunately I don't have a date for the fix yet.
Thanks
@cleidigh

Update :
@rimisuko
I just confirmed your observation. I have done huge imports and exports in testing, but missed >100 on selected messages, my omission...
So what I discovered is that the new Thunderbird menu api will not report a selection over 100. Basically someone decided no one would select more than 100. I will report and hopefully get the team to update the api.

I will report back here.

Hi @cleidigh,
First: many thanks for you efforts!
Earlier versions of IETNG could "export" attachments of a mail into the mail's (imap) folder. I could not find this function importEmlToFolder in the beta.

Thanks for your support!
I have to be honest that I kind of ignored that functionality thinking it was sort of obsolete and not used. This was my error. I am not even sure if it is working in 102.
I will see if it is possible to get working in the release if not in a point release. I just have so much going on.

Here is a brief status :

  • b6 is feature complete minus this function
  • I have done quite thorough testing
  • There are about 100+ beta users, mostly anonymous on b6
  • b7 will have two important fixes
  • fix 100 message export limit
  • workaround for TB mbox bug that makes bad mbox exports
  • should be this week

I will look into the function

Cheers

Hallo,

because you ask for feedback, here is mine.
First of all, thank you for the great work. We only use the copy to clipboard function. This also works in TB 115.2.2 with beta b8. However, the path to get there is now longer. In the old version you could access the menu item via the context menu of the message text (see attachment). I've seen that you can create shortcuts. Maybe someone else can help here?

I apologize for the double post (not a developer and new to GITHub), I meant to leave this as a comment.

b8 installed and seemed to run fine - no exhaustive testing.
b9 and tb (final?) will not install - returns incompatible with Thunderbird 115.2.3.
Note that version check has always returned only compatible with Thunderbird 102.

update : fixed in b9/release

I can't find the b9 version, is it online or am I blind?

I've also noticed an annoying behavior of the Options dialog when opened from any context menu (button, Tools menu, folder, message list): this dialog remains in the foreground and blocks access to the tabs.
This is particularly annoying when accessing help from the options dialog, as existing links cannot be clicked. What's more, reading is more difficult with a window in front of you 😅
Note that this problem does not exist when opening options from the add-on manager.

Finally, I'd like to improve the French translation (a few errors and untranslated lines). Is this possible, or is there already a dedicated translator?
If so, please let me know how I can get back to you: e-mail? link to a file space?
N.B.: for help, we may have to wait until next month due to vacations 😉

I was saying the profile export would be fixed in b9 or release. As it happens, I released v14 to the review Q yesterday, should be official in a couple of days. I will look at dialog scenario and see what is possible for the first maintenance release.
As far as translations are concerned, yes I have an official French translator, he is the Google Translate API ;-}

I know I'm reacting a little late as version 14 is about to be released, but I only switched to Thunderbird 115 very recently. I apologize for that.
I managed to get hold of beta 9 (which should also be the final?). The first problem I mentioned above (mail export only) has been solved (thank you), but I've encountered two others:

  1. The "Export Messages As... > Copy To Clipboard > Message - Headers" message list context menu commands don't work when more than one message is selected - Note that this was already the case in version 12. Would it be possible to remove these commands, or at least disable them when several messages are selected, especially as you've implemented them in the message context menu?
  2. In the folder context menu, the command "Folder Export (mbox) >Single Zipped mbox File" doesn't work well for me: it produces a .mbox file and an empty .zip file.

To make it up to you, here are the French-language files I've corrected and completed:
iet-14.0.0-b9-fr.zip

I'll deal with the help file later.

@cleidigh
Copy link
Collaborator Author

@DenB10
Yup I confirmed both your observations.
I messed up the zip with the last minute mbox extension option and missed it in spot testing.
For the copyToClipboard as you know its for one message. I can disable for multiple messages or do the first.
I think disable is is most intuitive.

Computer: Macbook Pro Late 2013 OSX 11.7.9. Using IET NG extension b8 v14.0.0 for TB 115.

I have been using the ImportExportTools NG extension for a while. It is invaluable for fighting spam. When I installed T-Bird 115.3.0, T-Bird deactivated the extension. I found the beta version and installed it.

My primary use is Copy To Clipboard > Message. I used this because the previous extension would copy the message to the clipboard without opening the message. That means I never triggered tracking pixels in the spam messages, but I did get enough information to add a filter rule for deleting the spam messages.

The b8 beta version works differently than the older version. When I select the Copy To Clipboard > Message option from the right-click context menu for the desired spam message, it does not copy the message to the clipboard. This procedure also fails for Copy To Clipboard > Headers. I attached a screenshot showing the context menu on an unselected message.

B8 beta does copy to the clipboard correctly if I left click to select a message in messages pane. As I mentioned above, selecting the message in this manner gives useful data to spammers. It tells them my address is active and that I open their messages. That leads to more spam.

I would appreciate a change to allow copying to the clipboard using the right-click context menu without selecting the message.

copy-to-clipboard

Thank you for keeping this excellent extension alive.

Yes I managed to flub the non message display case for CopyToClipboard as well as dealing with multiple selection. V14 is in the review Q, as soon as that is out I will prepare a 14.0.1 beta addressing this. This major release has taught me ways that pare using IETNG that I never knew before. The clipboard functionality is one of threm. By the way do use any shortcuts for this? Because the new menus can cause issues.

Finally you are the second Mac user reporting the double Tools menu entries. I think this is a Thunderbird bug and I am trying to get some input on it.

@cleidigh
Hey, thanks for the quick response! I appreciate your help. Your plans sound great. I do not use shortcuts, so no problems there. Since I'm not a power TB user, I don't use any other features of IETNG, but I'm inspired to learn.

A sharp rise in spam spurred me to look for a way to view a message without opening it. I found a blog post that mentioned IETNG and tried it. I didn't save the post URL and now I can't find that post again. But people were recommending your extension for previewing a message and I thought it was a great tool to fight spam.

@rohswell
Ok sounds good.
Since you are one of few people I have interacted with on this feature I would like to ask your opinion on an issue I also have to address.

This feature has always delt with a single message. Right now it breaks with more than one message selected.

So two questions :
Do you think having the function support more than one message is useful?
If keeping it to one I could do several things:

  • grey out/disable menus if more than one selected or just grab first in selection.

I would much appreciate your thoughts...
@cleidigh

@rohswell
Copy link

@cleidigh
Great questions that got me thinking. Before answering, I did some playing around in TB. I realized that turning off the message pane allowed me to select messages without opening them and changing their "New" status. Then I tried Exporting the selected messages to text, just the messages. That saved each message in a text file in my Downloads folder. The result is almost as handy as copying to clipboard. So then I was thinking about the clipboard feature differently. Here's a summary.

  1. With message pane OFF, I can get what I need for spam filtering using Export to text, OR Copy to Clipboard
  2. I see only a small value in copying multiple messages to the clipboard; easier to paste into editor
  3. If Export to [format] had option to save multiple messages to one file (with divider lines) that's better than clipboard

I'd say do what's easier. Exporting selected messages already supports multiple messages. Keep Copy to Clipboard for one message only. With multiple messages selected, the choice between greying out menus or just grabbing the first is really an issue of informing the user. I would avoid greying out/disabling menus because the user would have trouble interpreting that. Copying only the first message in selection without warning, would look like an error and might frustrate users.

One solution is to copy the first message in selection, then display an alert dialog that says it copied only the first message because multiple messages are not supported for clipboard. Include a checkbox that says "Don't show me this message again." Maybe you could also display an alert if they selected multiple messages and Copy to Clipboard. Both paths provide information the user needs to complete the task.

Adding "how to" information to the Help file would also be helpful. I know that's a lot of work, but it saves you time by reducing complaints.

I hope this helps.

All good points.
I was musing myself about the functionality and wondered about this...
What if I added a "StealthPreview" TM that opened a text window showing you the text body and copying to clipboard. No leaving Thunderbird for an editor needed!

@cleidigh
"StealthPreview" TM sounds like a useful feature. I like it. That would put IETNG into the preview add-on space with other add-ons that only do previews.

I'm sending it to you along with the css file, which I took the liberty of modifying because it was producing white lines in dark mode in some tables.
ietng14-help_fr.zip
You do with it what seems best.

Sincerely

v14.0.0 has finally been released!!

I would like to give everyone a big thank you for your help with this major effort.
Please download the release from the addon tab or the website.

I already have a set of items I missed or messed up. I have patches that will appear in beta shortly.

export account structure wrong
Zip folder messed - use mbox extension option and this works
selecting multiple messages for copy to clipboard does not give warning
csv export should do html to text conversion

Thank you so much for all the translation work.

I updated Import Export Tools NG using the update link about 10 days ago. It seemed to corrupt my TB profile. I lost the ability to drag (copy) emails directly from TB to Windows Live Mail (although I can to an external flash drive). Import mbox files was greyed out in IET NG options. I have TB 115.2.3. I did a Windows System Restore but that made no difference. I have now followed the instructions from David on Mozilla Support question 1419367 to download the beta version and now Import mbox files is available. However I still cannot drag (copy) emails directly from TB to Windows Live Mail. Instead of this working as it has done for many years & directly replicating the email in WLM, I now get a New Message form open in WLM containing a line such as imap-message://[username]%40gmail.co @imap.gmail.com/INBOX#35515
I'm not very tech-minded.
Maybe my mboxes have been corrupted. (I have 6 email accounts, the original emails were imported from WLM several years ago when I set up TB, and have been added to since)
Can anyone tell me how to restore the ability to copy individual emails directly from TB to WLM please.
