Build Automation

This project contains a set of batch and bash scripts to automate the build process of applications for Windows, Mac and Linux. It may be specific to my needs, but feel free to use any bits that may be useful.

About

By running automate_builds script, all projects within the current directory will be found and the build scripts will be ran. The project will get updated, cleaned, then built, tested then deployed. By default testing and deploy only calls the custom test/deploy steps.

Custom Steps

During each of the build steps (update, clean, build, test, deploy) the project specific/custom script for that step will get called if it exists. The location and name of the file must match the step name like: abs_build_hooks/project_step.yyy where yyy is .sh or .bat pending system. These scripts will be invode from within the /build/ directory and NOT from within build/abs_build_hooks.

Currently it is impossible to set a failure condition from the project specific/custom scripts. This is a desired feature of the build system; someday.

Installation

This build system assume the projects use premake5 scripts to create projects for Visual Studio, XCode or gmake. There may be other assumptions not yet listed; let me know.

Windows

  1. git clone or download the repository to some path: C:/path/abs/
  2. Set PATH environment variable to point to location downloaded.
    • Press Windows Key type System and open.
    • Open Advanced system settings
    • Open Environment Variables...
    • Carefully select Path and click Edit
    • Add the path C:/path/abs/batch
  3. Close any command prompts and reopen for the new path to be used.

Note: To send email the sendmail executable needs to exist in the PATH as does configuration file automatic_builds_set_credentials.bat don't use the one in the source control for anything more than a template or guide. This sets what email address to send to along with requiring a gmail account (username and password) to send from.

Linux (Ubuntu 18.04)

  1. git clone or download the repository to some path: ~/path/abs
  2. vim ~/.profile and add export PATH=~/path/abs:$PATH
  3. source ~/.profile to reload those changes in your terminal.

Note: To send email one must have sendmail and ssmtp installed on system, use apt-get install. Then setup the ssmtp configuration file, CONTAINS PASSWORD, DO NOT STREAM vim /etc/ssmtp/ssmtp.conf, starting with the following as a guide:

#
# Config file for SSMTP sendmail
#
# The person who gets all mail for userids < 1000
# Make this empty to disable rewriting.
root=user@gmail.com

# The place where the mail goes. The actual machine name is required no
# MX records are consulted. Commonly mailhosts are named mail.domain.com
mailhub=smtp.gmail.com:587
AuthUser=user@gmail.com
AuthPass=passwd
UseTLS=YES
UseSTARTTLS=YES
# Where will the mail seem to come from?
#rewriteDomain=

# The full hostname
hostname=name

# Are users allowed to set their own From: address?
# YES - Allow the user to specify their own From: address
# NO - Use the system generated From: address
#FromLineOverride=YES

Old version:

No longer fully useful, but steps like this will need to occur for each project. (changes incoming.)

I place automate_builds.bat and/or automate_builds.sh in a directory, tools that is included in my PATH.

The build folder gets placed in each separate project, and then make some wording/name changes as needed. This includes a make_project.lua script for premake5, and the automated scripts to clean and build a project.
