My terminal is my main window and, if it were placed on the right, most of the text would be nicely positioned and aligned roughly around the center of the screen.

That should be doable. I presume a global preference is OK, and a workspace-specific flag is not needed? I don't know how the UI would work if it were workspace specific...
For the use I make, a global preference would be enough. However I can imagine that people with multiple monitors might want to have something monitor-specific.
Not much in gnome-shell development is quick, unfortunately (a typo will leave you without a DE, which is more than a little irritating). But I've been busy with other projects, so I haven't actually looked into the code for this. Feel free to have a go yourself, though.
