Got my blink1 yesterday.
I'm using Ubuntu 12.10.
I downloaded binary and even copied 51-blink1.rules, and reloaded my rules.
I didn't edit any as it wasn't clear how.
It works fine with sudo but that seems a bit silly.
Any ideas?

Hi Luke,
Because of how udev works, you need to unplug and replug the device once you reload the rules.
I'll add that as a comment in the 51-blink1.rules file for others.

Looks like removing and reinserting may well have been the missing step, as it works now (though I happen to have rebooted too). See attached gif.

Congrats on a well executed Kickstarter campaign.
