Webots is installed on some (but not all) University computers, and these are available for you to access remotely using the University Remote Desktop Service.

Note: You will need to use your university account credentials to access this service and will also need to have multi-factor authentication (MFA) set up on your account. See here for more information on MFA.

Accessing a Computer During The Scheduled Lab Sessions

A virtual room of University Computers have been made available specifically for the FYGER lab sessions. Follow the steps below during the scheduled lab times to access one of these computers.

  • You should see from the event in myTimetable that "Remote Desktop PC Room 1" has been allocated to us for each of the FYGER lab sessions.
  • Click on the link in the myTimetable event, or click here to access this virtual computer room.
  • You should see a long list of PCs. Any that have a blue "Connect" button next to them are available to use.
  • Click on the Connect button next to an available machine. This will download a .rdp file to your computer.
  • Once downloaded, double click on the .rdp file and log in to the PC using your university account credentials. Look out for an MFA notification on your smartphone or tablet.
  • Once you are logged into the remote machine, Webots should be available in the list of installed programs: click the Windows Start Menu button the Windows Start menu button and start typing "Webots" to bring it up.
  • At the end of the session, close the PC and then close the Remote Desktop Connection window.

Accessing a Computer Outside of the Lab Sessions

The University Computers are also available for remote access outside of scheduled teaching sessions. These will generally be reserved for face-to-face classes during the day, but should be available to access outside of the teaching timetable (i.e. weekdays between 6pm and 9am and all day during the weekends). To access these machines then follow the steps below:

Note: Only the computers in this room have been configured to run Webots, so make sure you use this one. The software should already be installed.

  • Select any available PC (with the blue "Connect" button next to it).
  • Double click on the .rdp file that should have been downloaded to your computer and log in to the PC using your university account credentials (remember to look out for an authentication request from your MFA device).
  • Webots will be available in the list of installed programs: click the Windows Start Menu Button the Windows Start menu button and start typing "Webots" to bring it up.
  • At the end of the session, close the PC and then close the Remote Desktop Connection window.
