A big part of the OpenSpectrometer project is the online community-driven spectral database.

Biotechnology companies sell expensive curated databases of spectral signatures. The OpenSpectrometer online database aims to counter that with user-contributed and reviewed spectral signatures. If community knowledge can work for something as complex as Wikipedia, we can make it work for optical spectra.

OpenSpectrometer users can register an account with the database, and upload measured spectra. Any spectrometer can be used, but the instrument must be specified. Users can rate the reliability of a submitted spectrum, or combine spectra to reach consensus. The online tool set will show users the nearest matching spectra to a given entry. The web application will include tools for visualizing and inspecting spectra.
