# AI is playing matchmaker this Valentine's.

[AI's getting pretty good at the whole romance thing](https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20240211785791/en/McAfee-Research-Reveals-Love-Bytes-45-of-Men-Will-Turn-to-AI-to-Write-Love-Messages-this-Valentine%E2%80%99s-Day?utm_source=bensbites\&utm_medium=referral\&utm_campaign=ai-is-playing-matchmaker-this-valentine-s). More people are using AI to write heartfelt messages and enhance their dating profiles, but scammers are also getting wise, crafting fake identities and love scams that are harder to spot. McAfee's survey is spilling the tea.

## What's going on here?

AI is making it easier to find (or fake) love online, but trust is harder to come by.

![](https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/ea6f9881-5dda-4f3e-91b6-9977703c99b6/image.png?t=1707827519)

## What does this mean?

AI love is in the air! More people are using AI to write heartfelt messages and enhance their dating profiles.

This year, dudes are especially down with AI. Nearly 45% of guys (and 39% of all adults) will use AI tools to write their love messages on Valentine's Day. Why? Because it works! 69% of people got better responses using AI-generated content. Also, 30% of men and 27% of women are using AI bazooka on their online dating profiles.

But 57% would be offended if they found out their sweet nothings were bot-generated. And two-thirds (64%) would lose trust if someone uses AI photos on their profiles.

[» More stats](https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20240211785791/en/McAfee-Research-Reveals-Love-Bytes-45-of-Men-Will-Turn-to-AI-to-Write-Love-Messages-this-Valentine%E2%80%99s-Day?utm_source=bensbites\&utm_medium=referral\&utm_campaign=ai-is-playing-matchmaker-this-valentine-s) on online dating and safety from the survey.

## Why should I care?

Dating (especially online) is a minefield of AI tacos now. Scams were always there, but folks, you gotta be a lot savvier about communicating this usage with your loved ones. Using AI to express your genuine feelings better is a good thing. Like singing a [song that AI made](https://vdaysong.com/?utm_source=bensbites\&utm_medium=referral\&utm_campaign=ai-is-playing-matchmaker-this-valentine-s) for your connection. Just make sure that your partner is on board with this.

And I’m praying for y’all coming across AI images. Even I can’t tell which ones are real.

# AI video isn't patchy anymore, It's almost real.

[OpenAI's mogging everyone in the AI space again.](https://openai.com/sora?utm_source=bensbites\&utm_medium=referral\&utm_campaign=ai-video-isn-t-patchy-anymore-it-s-almost-real) Sora, a new AI model from OpenAI spits out videos based on simple text prompts and we are talking minute-long videos that feel insanely real. So what can you dream now, because Sora (sky in Japanese) is the limit.

## What’s going on here?

Open AI’s new text-to-video model, Sora, is a major leap for video-generating AI.

> >
>
> Introducing Sora, our text-to-video model.
>
> Sora can create videos of up to 60 seconds featuring highly detailed scenes, complex camera motion, and multiple characters with vibrant emotions.
>
> Prompt: “Beautiful, snowy… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…

> >
>
> [— OpenAI (@OpenAI)\
> Feb 15, 2024](https://twitter.com/i/status/1758192957386342435)
## What does this mean?

Text to video models have been improving gradually since early last year. We started with Will Smith choking on Spaghetti and started getting scripted history, dragon worlds, and decentish-looking videos. But two problems remain:

- The videos are still janky. You can tell it’s AI.

- They aren’t much long 4 secs, 10 secs, 20 if you push it.

OpenAI broke the chain of gradual improvement and came in an entire level upgrade (or even many levels maybe) with Sora.

Sora’s videos are smooth, dynamic, consistent and go up to 1 minute. You can get detailed: the style of animation, mood, camera angles, etc. Imagine specifying “Wes Anderson directs a Pixar short about hamsters." Sora aims to deliver.

Sora is not out for use yet. Everyone copy-pasting the demo examples OpenAI released and I can’t blame them, they are unreal 😉.

But let’s dig a bit deeper into Sora’s [technical report](https://openai.com/research/video-generation-models-as-world-simulators?utm_source=bensbites\&utm_medium=referral\&utm_campaign=ai-video-isn-t-patchy-anymore-it-s-almost-real) and see what OpenAI claims:

1. Sora can create videos in a large range of aspect ratios and resolutions. From widescreen 1920x1080p videos, vertical 1080x1920 videos and everything in between.

2. Similar to DALL·E 3, OpenAI uses language models (GPT) to turn basic prompts into power prompts getting high-quality videos.

3. Sora can use images and videos as inputs, not just text. That means:

- It can animate images.

- It can extend videos: backwards and forwards.

- It can edit videos like changing the scene with keeping characters the same.

- It can connect two videos, filling the in-between frames automatically.

The wildest claim OpenAI has (and we can see the hints) is that Sora understands the world through videos. It understands 3D motion, behaviour of objects and complex interactions (not perfect though). This all leads to creating a model that simulates our world to the best extent we can.

But how is OpenAI’s model this good, across all this stuff? In their own words: \*\*they are purely phenomena of scale.\*\*The best explanation of that is this demo with base compute, 4x and 16x compute.

## Why should I care?

AI just got serious about filmmaking and it’s gonna kill the video industry.

Just kidding, we don’t cry wolf around here. But in all honesty, get ready for a wave of AI-generated video hitting the web. Sora (and upcoming models) will not only make long, visually consistent videos, but they’ll also handle complex prompts with characters, emotions, and multiple scene changes.

Seeing is... not always believing. At least not anymore. It'll get harder to tell what's real footage and what's been cooked up by an AI. Limitations exist. Physics can be wacky in these videos, and Sora might misinterpret some directions. Don't throw out your special effects team just yet, but take note.

# Aya - AI for all languages.

[Cohere For AI just dropped a major multilingual AI bomb.](https://txt.cohere.com/aya/?utm_source=bensbites\&utm_medium=referral\&utm_campaign=aya-ai-for-all-languages) LLMs are hot right now. But they often leave out a huge chunk of the world due to language barriers. Gotta think beyond English. Well, Cohere just did with [Aya](https://cohere.com/research/aya?utm_source=bensbites\&utm_medium=referral\&utm_campaign=aya-ai-for-all-languages).

## What's going on here?

Aya is a multilingual LLM that supports a whopping 101 languages.

![](https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/ea480973-ec48-473b-9aa3-ba2168381c73/image.png?t=1707906753)

## What does this mean?

Most AI models get stuck on English and a few others, leaving a huge chunk of the globe out of the loop. Cohere for AI partnered with 3,000 researchers across the globe to create Aya.

Aya was trained on the largest multilingual dataset (513M prompts!) and outperforms other open-source multilingual models in tricky tasks like understanding, summarizing, and translating various languages. It also covers 50+ previously underserved languages; hello Somali and Uzbek!

The project is open-sourcing both the Aya model, as well as the multilingual instruction fine-tuned dataset.

## Why should I care?

More multilingual AI powers up nuanced conversations across cultures, and build tools that work for everyone, not just some of us. Especially when most of us are working with global teams now. Okay, forget teams. You can finally explain your tech job to family (no promises though).

And, the Aya dataset is a treasure for multilingual research. You can contribute to the Aya project or use it to do some stuff on your own.

# Can AI get a patent? \[Latest Guidelines Feb 2024]

**Can AI get a patent?** That's the question buzzing around tech. The US Patent Office (USPTO) just dropped some [guidelines](https://public-inspection.federalregister.gov/2024-02623.pdf?utm_source=bensbites\&utm_medium=referral\&utm_campaign=can-ai-get-a-patent-latest-guidelines-feb-2024) so we all know where things stand.

## What’s going on here?

The USPTO says only humans can be inventors and get patents. AI might be crazy smart, but it ain't legally a person.

![](https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/82fb5dad-9c3f-4324-858f-ded8ed415bfd/image.png?t=1707829164)

## What does this mean?

Basically, it means that humans get the legal credit, with AI being like a super-advanced tool. Even if AI helps out, you need a human inventor on the patent to make it official.

You can't just tell the AI "make something cool" and claim the patent. You gotta actually contribute to the invention's development.

The USPTO also says that technology can lead to new laws and it will update standards to match changes if Congress modifies laws on AI.

## Why should I care?

This makes a big difference for all of us building with AI. If you're a founder working on AI-generated inventions, make sure you can prove your role in the process or there's no patent protection. For investors, the current stakes are clear—strong IP depends on the human driving the AI, not just the AI itself.

###### **QUICK BITES**

[Nvidia, the big dog in AI chips, is branching out into custom chips.](https://www.reuters.com/technology/nvidia-chases-30-billion-custom-chip-market-with-new-unit-sources-2024-02-09/?utm_source=bensbites\&utm_medium=referral\&utm_campaign=daily-digest-can-t-stop-growing)The chip market is getting crowded and Nvidia wants to keep the throne by making personalized chips for AI companies.

**What is going on here?**

Nvidia is opening up new avenues beyond its traditional offerings of pre-designed chips.

![](https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/a44c4cd5-d6ba-4025-a256-81489369596a/image.png?t=1707741793)

**What does this mean?**

Nvidia holds a whopping 80% of the high-end AI chip market. Even beyond the stock tripling last year, Nvidia is 40% up YTD.

And still, it isn't resting. It is making a new team that’ll focus on making custom chips for AI companies. Its generalized chips (H100s, A100s etc.) do the job well but tech giants like Google, Microsoft and Amazon are shifting towards in-house chip development, aiming to cut costs and boost efficiency.

Reuters report that this team has met with folks at Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Google and OpenAI to get them to bet on Nvidia for custom chips too instead of going all DIY.

Btw, this isn’t a new development. Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang has been wanting to get into offering custom chips since 2022. And this team is also talking to telecom, automotive and video game customers which total up to a $30B market.[Dina McKinney](https://www.linkedin.com/in/dinamckinney/?utm_source=bensbites\&utm_medium=referral\&utm_campaign=daily-digest-can-t-stop-growing)is likely to lead this team.

\*\*Sidenote:\*\*Google gets its TPUs made by Broadcom, a big custom chips player and[reports last year](https://www.theinformation.com/articles/to-reduce-ai-costs-google-wants-to-ditch-broadcom-as-its-tpu-server-chip-supplier?rc=bdorru\&utm_source=bensbites\&utm_medium=referral\&utm_campaign=daily-digest-can-t-stop-growing)said that Google is thinking about ditching a significant chunk of the deal.

**Why should I care?**

As the demand for more specialized, energy-efficient chips grows, Nvidia's move to tailor-made chips and not just selling off-the-shelf solutions could boost the company even further.

To quote[Anissa from The Information](https://www.theinformation.com/briefings/nvidia-talks-to-microsoft-meta-amazon-about-custom-ai-chips?rc=bdorru\&utm_source=bensbites\&utm_medium=referral\&utm_campaign=daily-digest-can-t-stop-growing): Nvidia is arguably late to the custom chip field. Major cloud providers including Amazon and Microsoft have developed their own custom AI server chips, which they hope will lower their dependence on Nvidia. However, designing and continuously improving a chip that rivals Nvidia’s won’t be easy, so it is possible these customers could still want to work with Nvidia on custom chips.
