This replaces travis-ci/travis-ci#4295.

The original text by @davidsan follows

ppa:texlive-backports/ppa

This allows the installation of a more recent version of TeX Live in Ubuntu 12.04 container.

I would love to see this added, as the current TeX support is ancient 👍

👍 I need this ppa!

I'm now rather curious, actually, if there's something problematic about this request? (The few other whitelist requests I have made or +1'ed all happened promptly.)

Well, there are 132 open requests, and this PPA contains a rather staggering amount of stuff to review. (Even though most of the packages here are probably TeX-only files, the travis reviewer presumably needs to require the actual packaging to verify that nothing nasty is going on in the install scripts.)

This is still needed (or a newer Ubuntu version in the container-based infrastructure).

FYI, by using The Trusty beta Build Environment you get the following versions:

$ latex --version
pdfTeX 3.1415926-2.5-1.40.14 (TeX Live 2013/Debian)

$ xelatex --version
XeTeX 3.1415926-2.5-0.9999.3-2014012222 (TeX Live 2013/Debian)

I get mysterious compilation errors using the version of texlive I can get in the Trusty beta (and they disappear with TeX Live 2016). Please whitelist!
