Use Case:

  • A user attaches an image to a toot, but has not added alt-text/description for that image.

Desired result:

  • When tapping "Toot!" there should be a warning: "Toot this image without a description? Y/N".

Notes:

  • Users should be able to enable/disable this warning in settings.
  • This warning should be enabled by default, to promote accessibility.

  • I searched or browsed the repo’s other issues to ensure this is not a duplicate.

Hey
First of all, I emphasize with the intent a lot. It annoys the hell out of me when people post without image descriptions.
For this reasons we implemented indicators on images when description is set/not set. I think it creates less friction for people who are unable to fill them in for any reason (software, disability etc). Perhaps we could even make "not set" state more noticeable but I've kind of opposed to this dialog still. People who ignore indicators will continue to just press "okay" because it's still less effort for them confirm it than to fill in actual description.

Just wanted to write this issues as well. I am not the most active Mastodon user. Often I just forget that the ability to enter an alt-text exists until someone has already reacted to the post. I'd love to use it more.
Actually i never realised that there was an indicator for no-alt-text so i guess a more notifiable indication might just do the trick.
(Nevertheless thanks for all the work so far and in the future!)

Toot! for iOS has a nice feature where you can enable a setting that enforces image descriptions, example at https://eldritch.cafe/@shahaan/105827378430327515.

@crishaddad would this be a solution for you, too?

FWIW if this was an optional feature (i.e. a per user setting) I'd enable it on my account because I'd rather have the reminder than forget.

As suggested in #3555 i think it would be great if there was one notification, with a short explanation why image descriptions are important, the first time someone posts an image (without a description) and let them select there if they want a popup reminder en- or disabled.

i quite often miss the small indicator that the description is missing.
