From a SEO point of view, additional rel attributes in link tags in the header make sense, in order to deliver the connection of paginated pages in the blog for Google.

Please, make sure that they can be turned off. They are not always needed.

According to Google, rel = prev / next may be omitted for pagination. In my view, this issue can thus be closed, even if it may be quite relevant for other search engines.
