A small Ruby script that helps you find the branching point between two git branches.
First you’ll need to install the git-find-branching-point gem, as this will download the other gems required to run this script:
gem install git-find-branching-point
Next you’ll want to download the script file from the /lib folder and make it executable by running:
chmod u+x git-find-branching-point
You can now run it by calling the script by its full path name. You could also put the script somewhere in your $PATH and run it by typing ‘git-find-branching-point’.
Finding the branching point between two branches is as easy as running:
git-find-branching-point --branch <your first branch name here> --branched-from <your second branch name here>
You can also get a list of all available branches by running:
git-find-branching-point --show-branches
