This worked at some point, so is probably a regression.

See the attached image for the error you get when connecting to vtgate from MySQL Workbench.

Using recent-ish master: bba94ad
MySQL Workbench version 8.0.23 on Linux (although doing a SELECT current_user() seems to be something Workbench has done since 2017)
