Thank you @magnww for the suggestion! This bug is a known issue, see this bug we reported at Debian: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=934005 with the exact same fix. Tagging @bzed for his attention. We suggest that it be added to the Debian package.

10.3.10 is our last release for 10.3.x . Code in 11.0 (upcoming release) works differently, and this patch wouldn't apply. open-vm-tools built from the stable-11.0.x branch already detects Debian 10 correctly.

@oliverkurth @magnww I'm planning to fix that with the next point-release - which should fix the issue anyway, as we'll have 10.1 in the lsb_release output. If it help, I'll provide an backport in the meantime.
