What I don't get- why does the use of a specific lib version prevent compiling? Is it because were relying on the os-provided dev version instead of cloning its source repo and vuilding our own?

Yes (which is correct, we should not provide our own version). The new version marked a function as deprecated and our compiler options are set to not ignore those.
