I'm taking this out of draft mode in case @EreMaijala would like to approve it to be merged as an incremental step, with the TODOs being handled as follow-up PRs. But I'm also open to doing more work in this existing PR if that seems preferable.

I did a more thorough review of the use of getUserObject() in template code and made a few more minor adjustments in 4032bb1 to ensure appropriate typing everywhere.
