This usage appears in the documents of the Republican Era, as well as in the Xinhua Dictionary in Mainland China. However, when the Zhuyin phonetic symbols are used in the Chinese language teaching in Taiwan, regardless of whether it is in vertical or horizontal writing mode, a horizontal line should be used.</p>
