Tutorial (External) Links #381
Comments
When I look through the tutorials in general, I see links with no icon, and links with the box/arrow next to the link text. When using the links for a bit it was evident that the links with no icon only went to more tutorial content. The links with the box/arrow went away from the tutorial. This is only my opinion, but it did not matter to me if the links with the icon stayed in the WAI site, W3C site, or out to an external site. I just wanted to know if I was leaving the tutorial suite or not. I would be interested in others opinions, but I do not think more indication is needed for the links other than this current implementation. |
i tend to agree with Brent. |
Thanks for your feedback! |
At the Library of Congress, any links other than .gov domains are considered external. External links get an icon and open in a new tab. Any links external to loc.gov that are also .gov links just open in a new tab. |
I mildly like Laura's example of external links opening in a new page, but
do not feel strongly.

We usually give the users the freedom to decide on opening a new window or not. |
I think for mobile devices that it is preferred not to force open new windows. |
All in all the discussion lead to no immediate need of change, so I’ll close the issue. Thanks for the nuanced discussion. 👍 Go Team! 👍 |
Take a look at the Tutorials.
In some places we link to other pages or sections of the tutorials. Sometimes we link to W3C content, occationaly out into the rest of the internet. Currently all those links look the same.
Question: Do you find that external links (to non-WC3 content) should have an indication that this is the case? What about links to non-WAI W3C content? What about other resources of WAI? Would you prefer an icon or text to indicate the state of the link?
