FWIW, I hate all the style definition duplication this requires but it provides a better UX so it's worth it to me at this time.
I would rather use CSS custom properties (variables), but I have to support IE11 at the moment.

exists, but it is currently only capable of transforming variables defined at the:root
-level, which makes it relatively worthless for this use case as we would still have to have separate style definitions forbody.light-mode
andbody.dark-mode
just like in this PR (gaining nothing).
