use friendlier path formatting in summary message #44

use abbreviate-file-name and directory-file-name to turn paths like
/home/user/foo/bar/ into ~/foo/bar, which looks nicer and saves space
on the modeline.

further condense the message by using a nice unicode arrow → instead
of words.
