..is not explicitly defined. it links to the exposition of what a "special" scheme is, but there is not text or example denoting explicitly what constitutes non-special scheme.

Hmm, we use this pattern a lot (referring to a definition using its negation). It means the negation of the definition. If that is too confusing we'd have to duplicate a lot of definitions.
