Project 1 - Flicks

Flicks is a movies app using the The Movie Database API.

Time spent: 10 hours spent in total

User Stories

The following required functionality is complete:

  • User can view a list of movies currently playing in theaters from The Movie Database.
  • Poster images are loaded using the UIImageView category in the AFNetworking library.
  • User sees a loading state while waiting for the movies API.
  • User can pull to refresh the movie list.

The following optional features are implemented:

  • User sees an error message when there's a networking error.
  • Movies are displayed using a CollectionView instead of a TableView.
  • User can search for a movie.
  • All images fade in as they are loading.
  • Customize the UI.

The following additional features are implemented:

  • Implemented a homepage shortcut using 3D touch. User can choose to view 'now playing' movies. This will be build out more as I build more categories into Flicks.
  • Add Icon images to the app.

Please list two areas of the assignment you'd like to discuss further with your peers during the next class (examples include better ways to implement something, how to extend your app in certain ways, etc):

  1. When to use storyboard and when to implement programmatically?
  2. Correct way to store api keys.
  3. Multithreading & updating on the main thread

Video Walkthrough

Notes

Describe any challenges encountered while building the app.

  1. I took a good bit of time trying to figure out where to put the UIView that shows the network error message on the story board so it appears at the top of the screen but does not push the first cell down in the table view.

  2. Still learning Swift syntax

Project 2 - Flicks

This second iteration of Flicks is a movies app displaying box office and top rental DVDs using The Movie Database API.

Time spent: 9 hours spent in total

User Stories

The following required functionality is completed:

  • User can view movie details by tapping on a cell.
  • User can select from a tab bar for either Now Playing or Top Rated movies.
  • Customize the selection effect of the cell.

The following optional features are implemented:

  • For the large poster, load the low resolution image first and then switch to the high resolution image when complete.
  • Customize the navigation bar.

The following additional features are implemented:

  • Search bar pops into view on the search button being pressed
  • User can see upcoming movies using the 'Upcoming' tab
  • User can watch a specific movie's trailer in its respective detail view

Please list two areas of the assignment you'd like to discuss further with your peers during the next class (examples include better ways to implement something, how to extend your app in certain ways, etc):

  1. UX practices when user interacts with cells. How much feedback to give?
  2. Video takes more time to load than pictures. Best practice on loading videos?

Notes

  • Designing the app to look how I wanted proved challenging when moving storyboard elements around.
  • The Movie Database API sometimes categorizes movies in both 'Now Playing' and 'Upcoming' lists.
