Sorry this is not a super technical post, but just realized my beloved iTunes controller isn't working in the newest version of macOS Sierra (10.12). Let me know if I can help in any way to get it working! Thanks so much,
Adam

I won't be able to upgrade to Sierra for a while because some of the software I use isn't compatible. But in the meantime, somebody else may step in and see what needs to be done to get Synergy compiling on the new OS.

Please notify me albs, Synergy is super useful widget, been using it for at least 10 years.

Worked great on Sierra but with High Sierra it just crashes and I can't get it to open. Hope you can fix it, the best of it's kind of software by leaps and bounds!

Merging #8 here.

Personal note: I'm on Sierra still. I upgraded to High Sierra but it hosed my system so I had to do a clean reinstall of Sierra and will likely stay there for a while.

I share the sadness that this great tool just stopped loading. I've been using it for years too. For me, it had been working fine in High Sierra, but the recent update to 10.13.2 gave it the problem. Hoping there's a fix someday.

Just wanted to add my voice thanking wincent - I bought and used Synergy for years - almost every day. I appreciate it wincent, and look forward to a High Sierra version...

Wincent - Another LONG time Synergy (paying) customer. Please/please/please update Synergy for HighSierra. (BarTunes is NOT a viable replacement). Happy to pay!!!!

Am I an anomaly? Have been A-OK with Synergy and High Sierra, updating macOS not too long after HS was released and have used Synergy daily. Only thing I can think of is that I do not start Synergy in the normal manner. Years before HighSierra I wanted to open/quit iTunes, Synergy, and a couple other "related" applications all at once. I made a couple Automator apps to do such but Synergy didn't behave. So I pointed Automator's 'Open Application' action to Synergy>Package Contents>Preference Panes>Synergy.prefPane>Package Contents>Helpers>Synergy. Perhaps doing so would work for others - not making an Automator app but simply drilling down to the above and adding that to your Dock or however would make it work for you.

I just tried to open Synergy Preferences and, yep, "Synergy Preferences quit unexpectedly.

Oh man, thank you. It works perfectly. You are a god among men. I added the 'Synergy' app from that location to my login items and am good to go. I admit it's a bit strange how much pleasure I get from seeing those blue buttons at the top of my screen again, but there you go. Thanks again!

@timlance

Ha ha! Very cool. I know what you mean about "seeing those blue buttons". As I just wrote elsewhere:
I have tried every similar application that has come along and none perform as well as Synergy. I did use YouControlTunes because it could be setup to quit when iTunes quit whereas Synergy was always running in background when iTunes quit - hence my wanting the Automator action to quit Synergy. But YCT went FUBAR and the lack of a suitable replacement motivated me to try the Automator route.

No need to use Automator at all. Just use Finder to go into the folder structure of the "Synergy Preferences" application. The path is below, but the tricky part is that for the Synergy Preferences and Synergy.prefPan items, you have to right click on them and choose "Show Package Contents" to keep opening the file structure.

Applications -> Synergy Prefences -> Contents -> PreferencePanes -> Synergy.prefPane -> Contents -> Helpers -> Synergy

The last item, Synergy, is the application. Just drag that on to your dock and you can start it anytime. Or what I did was to go into System Preferences / Users & Groups and I added the Synergy application to my Login Items so it loads whenever the computer starts.

Hope that helps.

I'm able to load Synergy by using the above technique to get into the Package Contents.
But if I try to change any settings, by selecting Preferences from the Synergy menu, or from the recently added dock icon, I get the "Synergy Preferences quit unexpectedly."

Is anyone able to access the settings in High Sierra?

Now that you mention it, I can't either - same result as you. Luckily I had made my choices way back in the day and they're still what I want today.

Have you another system on which you could get it running? Know some good friend with same? If so set it up accordingly and then copy relevant files to new High Sierra system.

The other option you could consider is modifying the preferences file directly (~/Library/Preferences/org.wincent.Synergy.plist) using a property list editing tool. Not the most user-friendly way to modify preferences, but you could do it as a last resort. You can inspect the current contents with plutil -p ~/Library/Preferences/org.wincent.Synergy.plist (using plist which may be part of a base macOS install, or perhaps only comes with the Xcode command-line tools; I am not sure).

@digamejh

Thank you for that information, @wincent. Since I reformatted my Mac before attempting to install Synergy from scratch, my Preferences file is blank and I don't have a backup of how it was before. Would you be willing to share what a sample configuration .plist file might look like (specifically with regard to global hotkeys)?

My heart is broken. I needed to do a clean install of Mojave. Bringing over everything Synergy related on the HighSierra drive to the Mojave drive results in a basic manifestation (e.g. merest button set, no floater, no defined keystrokes, etc.) which only does play/pause, previous track, and next track. Useless.

I'm apparently slow to the party and spent an hour and a bit figuring out what you guys already had determined. I did, however, discover something not mentioned here: if you hold down the Option key when starting the Synergy app in High Sierra, it will launch and start working according to your existing preferences. Apparently that skips opening the configuration window.

@timlance

Works like a charm. My problem is how to make starting it up automatically. That is, how to start it without being present to hold down Option.

I'm guessing part of the problem is that the code communicates with 'iTunes' so doesn't know about an app named 'Music' at all. Sadly, this might be the end of the line. It's only been a couple of days, but I really miss the blue buttons up on the menu bar. Bummer.

Damn Penage, that makes just too much sense about the iTunes/Music thing!

@Penage

Penage commented Oct 9, 2019

So this is definitely not a solution, but it helps me through my grief of losing Synergy :-)

I created 3 scripts (each shown below)in Script Editor, exported them as applications, gave them the appropriate blue music control icons I found on the Internet, and dropped them on the right side of my dock.

tell application "Music" to next track
tell application "Music" to playpause
tell application "Music" to play

Haven't found any way to put them on the menu bar though, but it's something just for when I want to quickly pause, play or skip songs.

Dude, thank you so much for this post. I've been dying without the controls in the menu bar!

@yannis1962

Bartunes is suboptimal compared to Synergy. The latter has the most elegant way of permanently showing the music played, with Bartunes you have to click on the icon to see the song name as part of the menu. I use Synergy for ages and want it back!!!

@timlance

I had bought into SmashTunes (great in Mojave) but it's not working Catalina's Music, though it should be. I just tried SkipTunes and it is as SmashTunes. YMMV. I'd give so much to have Synergy back!

I have found an app not mentioned on this thread: Silicio. It is free, and shows a floating window of the album cover along with some song information. It does work on Catalina and it does have hotkey support. And I miss Synergy...

Excellent find. I once downloaded it but that was years ago. Same time as I figured out a workaround for Synergy. I've been using TunesArt. Have downloaded Silicio. Can't decide if it trumps TunesArt. I very much like the added features of being able to adjust the size of the floater and having some track info on the floater. TunesArt can show lyrics with just a click on the floater.

No, it is not transparent nor would I want it to be, not even a little.

There is a Preference to make it be 'Always on top'.

There is no difference between the small and medium, one is just bigger (i.e. everything, including the text of the title, is just bigger). The large size does allow for more text. In checking this out I was surprised how much (well, not all that much, but still ...) did show. Certainly more than others that show nothing. Music's own minelayer is the best at this, scrolling the title. TunesArt can scroll it in the menu bar but does not give much space to it.

I'd happily pay for Synergy again.

@val3riefr
Copy link

So the problem comes from the new name of iTunes? I could have the synergy buttons back on the topbar, but nothing is working. Could maybe renaming or relinking to the "Music" app instead of iTunes do the trick?

@timlance

timlance commented Sep 20, 2020

Have settled on TunesArt. Just deleted from my system: Silicio, SkipTunes, SmashTunes, MiniPlay, BarTunes, a couple others.

I'd probably just stick with Music's own mini player but I need the hotkeys support.

It just dawned on me I have not tried to make hotkeys with System Preferences>Keyboard>Shortcuts. Not sure if such will work as global (i.e. when other apps are in front). As I'm a real lazy SOB it'll be a while before I bother.

And, once again, I'd pay well for a modern Synergy.

@punkimndrublik

I settled on Juice. Works for me but I'd pay for a modern Synergy as well!

Is there one bar player that is always on in the background? I like to just press play even if iTunes is not open
