I don't like the gitter app, the app seems largely unmaintained, and it generally doesn't seem like the best place for folks to get help. If we want to do something like this in the future, a better tool is probably Slack or Discord. Please feel free to agree/disagree/discuss :)

I don't feel strongly about it. I see people were there as recently as 10/21 for reference.

I'm personally inclined to agree with the sentiment of this change. Gitter is not a commonly used means of communication in my experience across other projects that I interact with. Most seem to be leveraging Discord as it's already just so widely adopted. I would be inclined to have the Winston community adopt it as well personally.

Only consideration I would make is if we want to go ahead and setup a WinstonJS discord server (or alternative) so we don't have any downtime in regards to individuals having a means of getting ahold of the community?

I agree that having some transition would be nice, and we should post in Gitter before merging this, but I don't personally anticipate hanging out in whatever channel gets set up. I would tend toward referring folks to peer support on Stack Overflow or something like that.

There is a Winston Discord that @indexzero set up, but I'll have to login to Discord sometime and figure out the name and invite you all (I don't really use that platform either). I probably also would not be active on Discord either, though, so while I'm open to having it as a place for people to chat, I don't want users to necessarily expect that maintainers will monitor that. +1 on recommending StackOverflow to users (@maverick1872 I just tried out the issue template and saw that one of the options links there -- awesome! 🚀 ).

Happy to wait to merge this though until we figure out the Discord stuff and post a final message in gitter.

Here is the link to the Winston Discord: https://discord.gg/vNMmYS3m . Let me know if you have any trouble getting into there. If it works for you, I'll post in the gitter as well (and add to the readme / update this PR).

Worked for me - Although since there's no previous communications here I vote we just remove Gitter and leave it up to the community to determine if a discord server is even something they want/will find useful.

I put a note in gitter, but for now, let's leave any badges/info out of the readme, and if anyone asks for such a platform, we can add an invite link into the readme for Discord.
