Recorded for 6 hours, but unfortunately had it set to a full hard drive, is it possible to recover the file? #896

macOS version: 10.14
Kap version: 3.2.2 (3.2.2.1577)

Steps to reproduce

Perhaps try to record on a full hard drive?

Current behaviour

After recording for 6 hours with the location set to a full hard drive, Kap gave me an error after trying to save and now I don't know if the file is saved somewhere temporarily and I can recover it or if it's totally lost.

Expected behaviour

Record to a temporary directory if the current hard drive is full, and/or ask me to save to a different folder that is not full

@sindresorhus does Aperture send an error when the drive where you are recording fills up? Or do we only find out after the fact? Is there a way to track such an error and end the recording, so we can at least retrieve it?

@youssefavx You can find the temporary directory like this: https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/94964/where-is-the-temp-folder There you can look for recently updated directories to find the file. Make sure you don't restart your computer in the meantime.

@karaggeorge Aperture throws an error when the hard drive is completely full and it's unable to continue writing.

I think there are two things we could do:

  1. Aperture (the Swift part) should ensure there's at least x amount of space available before starting to record. Not sure what this number should be, but I guess 1 GB is a good minimum.
  2. When Kap fails at saving the original recording, it should show an error and then open the temp file location so the user can do what they want with the original.

@sindresorhus I'm sorry I should've taken a screenshot but I didn't and just clicked Ok. I didn't know what the error was related to at the time. If I recall correctly, it might have had a long directory-looking string.

Thank you so much! I looked in the temporary directory and found a nice 28 GB mp4 file.

I just encountered this exact problem - when opening Kap there is no way to access the previously recorded video unless I go rooting around in /private/var/folders.
