You mentioned that you didn't want to use TRS cable because of common design flaws during their manufacture. Would a 4P4C connector be a better option?

4P4C

4P4C stands for "4-position 4-conductor". It's the cable used to connect the telephone handset to the unit, so it would be pretty common for people to have spares of. It has four pins/cables.

It is significantly larger than a TRS connector, so you may have to adjust the dimensions of the board if you want to use it. I don't know their operating specs.

SDL

SDL stands for "Shielded Data Link". It was used by the IBM Model M keyboards with detachable cables. The connector is available with a range of 4 to 16 pins.

These cables aren't very common. I don't know their operating specs.

Interesting. I just ordered v2.0 of the PCB which has a 4-pin DIP breakout to Vcc/GND/RX/TX as well as the TRRS breakout to Vcc/GND/SDA/SCL. 4P4C may be a good choice.

Now, I've only tried two TRRS cables, and one of them was made incorrectly. I will have to try some more before I determine that moving away from them is wise, but 4P4C is probably a good option. Will keep this in mind.
