In dmesg:

init: Unable to connect to the system bus: Failed to connect to socket /var/run/
dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file or directory

Possibly related to:

the discussion is two years old and in-between /var/run does not exists anymore, now it is just symlink to /run, what is tmpfs - it's lost on shutdown & recreated during boot.

where +- in the dmesg is it shown ? can you post at least 3-4 lines around? and dbus was running at that time?

Starting DBUS from XBMC xbian-config and restarting XBMC works. The disks are NOW viewable through Video and Music

I just pushed hotfix to Beta1.1 installs (v1.2) fixing some issues with latest Debian 7.2 updates. Also this old dbus problem should be solved with it.
