Reworked max age to grow exponentially

Thank you for the pull request! Not entirely sure what I'm looking at though, this seems to attempt to resolve multiple issues at once. Would it maybe be possible to submit them in separate PRs so they can be merged individually? |

At the meeting today I realized I forgot to add in something to keep track of the number of cycles
