Dataset String Template: Playlist with the template does not show the items

There appears to be a problem with the dataset string template, follow these steps to recreate the issue:

1. Create a Playlist on a layout
2. Add a Dataset - String template with placeholders on the plalist
3. Select the dataset containing two rows that has only one column (filterBy)
4. In the Appearance tab, provide the column name i.e., [filterBy]

Expected result: Layout preview shows the two items of the dataset
Actual result: Shows nothing and does not show no data message either

Also, if you import a working 3.3.8 layout with a dataset into 4.0.4 and it doesn't work as expected,
