After I came across several opinions that the default installation is "overloaded", I think it is necessary to change the name and description of the graphical system roles.

  • first of all, these sets are really complete.
  • for a beginner who does not want to install something after installation, but wants to "just work", these changes will only emphasize his choice.
  • for more experienced who do not want an "overloaded" desktop, this change will allow his to pay attention to the "Generic Desktop" item and make it clear that he can either from scratch set up your environment, or select the full set and remove the unnecessary ones from there. He may still not notice the ability to configure a set of packages before installation, however, this change will give him an understanding of what awaits him after installation.

I have my fair share of doubt that adding filler words like 'complete' and 'full' makes any difference. Let alone that 'complete' might, even more, give the impression of 'nothing missing' - which is also never the case.

Judging by the standard set in system roles, it really seems that we are trying not to miss anything.

" Desktop with 'DE' ", not just a shell with all the "basic" (and a small set of possible unnecessary), but a full-fledged environment with a fairly large set of software. There are a mail client, irc client, rdp client, games, torrent downloader, image editor, etc. Clearly visible that it was carefully chosen. " Desktop with DE and set of software, selected by openSUSE" would be more suitable here :)

As for me, most users still under the general names " Desktop with DE " expect the most typical set of software. And these changes will make it clear that it is quite complete, and if you do not want this, there is a "Generic Desktop" item that will emphasize the ability to configure a set of software out of the box.

Possibly it is enough to change the description of the roles, emphasizing that this is a system with an :

  • "additional set of software"
  • "a carefully selected set of software"
  • or something like that.

Although, to be honest, I doubt that most will pay attention to the description, as long as they see the usual "Desktop with DE", but if you consider this option more suitable, I will change the proposed changes for this.

Correct proposed changes
