Tutoyering support in Transifex #1
Comments
FUD: "Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt" - possibly not what you meant? All I can come up with is to isolate all those strings into a locale override on the theme level. Perhaps it would be useful to add override templates like that to some namespace in the same transifex project? Or a separate transifex project. |
Actually I ment FUD as you explained it. If there are numerous Transifex projects, each for their own version of a specific language, the purpose of having an unified way of translating things is gone. And this leads to little fear (I'm never afraid), a lot of uncertainty (of which language-project to pick for which Magento shop) and certainly doubt (whether Transifex is the right approach). Indeed we could add a specific override file (translate.csv) which would translate all formal strings into an informal strings. This for sure will get things going in the beginning. |
:) And would those overrides be part of the existing project, or would they be in a new project. |
I would say in the same project. For instance by creating a resource translation.csv |
Transifex makes it possible to translate English to a specified language, but it only allows for choosing from a predefined list of languages. With various languages (examples: German, Dutch) it is normal to have a formal way of saying things (German: Sie) and an informal way of saying things (German: du) - in other words: tutoyering.
When a language-pack needs to become available for both the formal as the informal way, it would be logical to have 2 language-packs - each bound to their own locale (German "du" becomes locale "de_DU", German "Sie" becomes locale "de_SIE"). But Transifex does not allow for this yet. I have mailed Transifex on this matter.
One other way to solve this, is simply to start your own Transifex project, upload all Magento CSV-files and start from there. But this leads to FUD.
If you have any suggestions and remarks to make on this subject, please do.
