Muting the video programmatically doesn't work. Is there any way to accomplish that?

No, Apple doesn't allow volume controls programatically[no public API]. We can only control through the hardware controls. I tested writing and controlling through the HTML, no change.

I think the OP is referring to use the Javascript functions player.setVolume(...) or player.mute(). These don't appear to do anything, though...
