This issue appears to be exclusive to BSPWM. I've tried to reproduce the issue in i3 and the shader works as expected.

running picom --backend glx --window-shader-fg ~/.config/picom/testShader.glsl in i3 results in:

could you do xprop > 1 running bspwm and xprop > 2 running i3 on the same window applying a shader on behaves differently and post diff -u 1 2?

do windows that shader does/doesn't apply to running bspwm have something common? for some reason, i'm thinking about their depths (you can check a window's depth using xwininfo).

Yeah polybar and zim have different depths. Polybar has depth of 32 and zim had 24. I took info in both bspwm and i3 in case it's useful.

However I noticed that the kitty terminal also has a depth of 32, but doesn't seem to be affected when I run with --window-shader-fg ~/.config/picom/testShader.glsl in bspwm.

I've done a bit more testing, I looked at some of rules you can set for windows in bspwm trying to figure out why bspwm might treat polybar and other windows differently. Well I found that setting manage=off on a window will apply the shader. This isn't a solution because now bspwm no longer has any control over the window and can't even focus it.

I've got a rule in my picom config to only apply the shader to Zim.

window-shader-fg-rule = [
  "testShader.glsl:class_g = 'Zim'",
];

I ran bspc rule -a Zim manage=off, then launched zim:
ksnip_20240201-103726

Then I ran picom and the shader was applied:
ksnip_20240201-103814

So something about bspwm managing windows causes the shader to not be applied.

Hello, sorry for the late reply I've been away for a couple of days.

I've built and tested #1179 and I'm pleased to say it works!

I also tested using --config=/dev/null (with the version from my package manager) and that also applied the shader correctly.
The full command used was picom --backend glx --window-shader-fg ~/.config/picom/testShader.glsl --config=/dev/null

Image decouple should keep all the image properies from the source
image, so shader must be copied. And there are also some internal
properties what should be inherited but wasn't.

In particular this prevents images from losing their shaders when
alpha is applied.
