Implements test sharding for integration tests running on Ubuntu runners.

  • mac and windows runners are limited so we don't shard for them on slow CI

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Refactor

    • Improved caching in continuous integration workflows.
    • Implemented test sharding to optimize test execution times.
  • Chores

    • Updated test coverage script to support test splits and duration storage.

Walkthrough

The updates consist of refining CI/CD workflows and test scripts. Workflow changes involve introducing test sharding to distribute tests across multiple runners, adjusting cache keys in environment setup, and renaming a job for clarity. The test script modifications add support for test coverage splits and duration tracking, enabling more efficient test executions.

Changes

File Path Change Summary
.github/actions/.../action.yml Modified cache key generation by changing input variable interpolation and removing hashFiles call.
.github/workflows/.../integration-test.yml Added matrix strategy with six shards for tests and adjusted test execution for sharded tests on Ubuntu and non-sharded tests on macOS and Windows.
.github/workflows/.../unit-test.yml Renamed job to "unit-test".
scripts/test-coverage-xml.sh Introduced test splits, group, and duration storage; modified test execution commands to include these parameters.

Thank you for using CodeRabbit. We offer it for free to the OSS community and would appreciate your support in helping us grow. If you find it useful, would you consider giving us a shout-out on your favorite social media?

Chat

There are 3 ways to chat with CodeRabbit:

  • Review comments: Directly reply to a review comment made by CodeRabbit. Example:
    • I pushed a fix in commit <commit_id>.
    • Generate unit-tests for this file.
  • Files and specific lines of code (under the "Files changed" tab): Tag @coderabbitai in a new review comment at the desired location with your query. Examples:
    • @coderabbitai generate unit tests for this file.
    • @coderabbitai modularize this function.
  • PR comments: Tag @coderabbitai in a new PR comment to ask questions about the PR branch. For the best results, please provide a very specific query, as very limited context is provided in this mode. Examples:
    • @coderabbitai generate interesting stats about this repository from git and render them as a table.
    • @coderabbitai show all the console.log statements in this repository.
    • @coderabbitai read src/utils.ts and generate unit tests.
    • @coderabbitai read the files in the src/scheduler package and generate a class diagram using mermaid and a README in the markdown format.

Note: Be mindful of the bot's finite context window. It's strongly recommended to break down tasks such as reading entire modules into smaller chunks. For a focused discussion, use review comments to chat about specific files and their changes, instead of using the PR comments.

CodeRabbit Commands (invoked as PR comments)

  • @coderabbitai pause to pause the reviews on a PR.
  • @coderabbitai resume to resume the paused reviews.
  • @coderabbitai review to trigger a review. This is useful when automatic reviews are disabled for the repository.
  • @coderabbitai resolve resolve all the CodeRabbit review comments.
  • @coderabbitai help to get help.

Additionally, you can add @coderabbitai ignore anywhere in the PR description to prevent this PR from being reviewed.

CodeRabbit Configration File (.coderabbit.yaml)

  • You can programmatically configure CodeRabbit by adding a .coderabbit.yaml file to the root of your repository.
  • The JSON schema for the configuration file is available here.
  • If your editor has YAML language server enabled, you can add the path at the top of this file to enable auto-completion and validation: # yaml-language-server: $schema=https://coderabbit.ai/integrations/coderabbit-overrides.v2.json

scripts/test-coverage-xml.sh (3)
  • 25-28: The conditional logic for storing test durations is correctly implemented. However, ensure that the .test_durations file is secured and not exposed in any artifacts, as it may contain sensitive information about the test environment.
  • 31-37: The logic for running tests with coverage in a sharded fashion is implemented. Verify that the --splits and --group flags are correctly supported by the pytest version used in the project.
  • 44-44: The coverage xml command is unchanged. Confirm that the coverage data from sharded tests is correctly combined before this command is run to ensure accurate coverage reporting.
.github/actions/setup_environment/action.yml (1)
  • 85-89: The removal of hashFiles from the caching keys is noted. Ensure that this change does not affect the cache's ability to invalidate when necessary, such as when integration requirements change.
.github/workflows/integration-test.yml (2)
  • 84-85: The addition of a matrix strategy with six shards is noted. Confirm that the project's infrastructure can support running six parallel jobs without degrading performance or incurring additional costs.
  • 216-223: The conditional logic for running sharded tests on Ubuntu and non-sharded tests on macOS and Windows is correctly implemented. However, ensure that the matrix.shard variable is correctly passed to the test-coverage-xml.sh script and that the script is capable of interpreting it correctly.
